I enjoyed this a lot。 It's a well thought-out dystopia, with a punk science fiction story at its heart。 Set only a hop, skip, and a jump in our own future, SFSX tells the story of a world where all forms of intimacy are regulated。 You can make love to your legal, married partner, but its monitored and you have to fill in a bunch of paperwork。 And unless you're straight and considered "normal" by the authoritarian government - "The Party" - then you face "Reformation"。 It's basically every right- I enjoyed this a lot。 It's a well thought-out dystopia, with a punk science fiction story at its heart。 Set only a hop, skip, and a jump in our own future, SFSX tells the story of a world where all forms of intimacy are regulated。 You can make love to your legal, married partner, but its monitored and you have to fill in a bunch of paperwork。 And unless you're straight and considered "normal" by the authoritarian government - "The Party" - then you face "Reformation"。 It's basically every right-wing politician's wet dream。 A world full of Ben Shapiros。 I'm surprised at the negative reviews here though - people claiming it's too preachy or pro-SW。 The truth is, the enemies of the SFSX world - the gender critical feminists, angry incels, and conservative fundamentalists - are never going to read this book。 And if they did, they wouldn't absorb its message anyway。So it might be preaching to the converted。 But as one of the converted, I throughly agree with its commentary on love, sex, and censorship。 Keep on fighting ✊ 。。。more

I loved everything about this。

This was an interesting story set in a world were sex is controlled。 A group of sex and love loving individuals fight for the right to be themselves。 I like the simple line art and colors。

Cicada

I like that it’s named after the Prince song。 Also, the song in question is stuck in my head。

This was an interesting read。 It takes a very simple premise rooted in truth which is that some people in government and religion wish to control people even more。 And if they were to grab hold and continue with it, things would be awful in the long run。 Think of this as the dystopian version because everything is taken to the extreme。 It might feel a tad preachy at times but not bad。As a result of it being an extreme scenario, it is rather graphic。 There are depictions of sex, bondage, and tort This was an interesting read。 It takes a very simple premise rooted in truth which is that some people in government and religion wish to control people even more。 And if they were to grab hold and continue with it, things would be awful in the long run。 Think of this as the dystopian version because everything is taken to the extreme。 It might feel a tad preachy at times but not bad。As a result of it being an extreme scenario, it is rather graphic。 There are depictions of sex, bondage, and torture。 I've read far more graphic so it's certainly not the worse but it's not for the weak minded。The art is pretty good throughout the series。 Some of it isn't my favorite and occasionally there's panels that could have used a little more work but it didn't prevent me from reading it。 。。。more

Kind of like if The Handmaid’s Tale, the Dirty Computer visual album, and Bitch Planet got together。 It’s a very near future world, where right-wing “family friendly” conservatives and second wave “radical” feminists get together to eliminate kink, porn, sex work, queer culture and LGBTQ people, and anything “demeaning” or “inappropriate” from American society。 Mostly through government control, raids, brainwashing, and torture。The characters here are diverse in their motivations for fighting ba Kind of like if The Handmaid’s Tale, the Dirty Computer visual album, and Bitch Planet got together。 It’s a very near future world, where right-wing “family friendly” conservatives and second wave “radical” feminists get together to eliminate kink, porn, sex work, queer culture and LGBTQ people, and anything “demeaning” or “inappropriate” from American society。 Mostly through government control, raids, brainwashing, and torture。The characters here are diverse in their motivations for fighting back, and their choices for survival in this new world。 Good representation on the page, whether incidental or intentional, of BIPOC, fat, and disabled characters。 Definitely adult。 Lots of depictions of sex acts, whether consensual or very not, as well as graphic violence, torture, and more。 It’s hard and uncomfortable and definitely not for everyone。 But for those with the stomach for it, there’s a lot of commentary on our society, including such recent events as incels, tiki torch-wielding terrorists, privacy and data tracking, including biotech and Fitbit-like devices, SESTA-FOSTA, and anti-trans legislation。 The queer punk sex workers are the underground revolutionary heroes here, as they always have been throughout history, and we don’t deserve them。Would recommend, depending on the reader。 。。。more

This was a pleasurable read— it feels good to see sex-positive-gay-crimes-against-injustice in a graphic novel。 I also loved how the style changes a little with each chapter。 Brings up good conflicts of trust and the different paths people take to survive。 It’s not five stars because it is more plot driven and I tend to like when there are really detailed scenes or moments, or more zooming out and zooming in action。 But it makes sense with how they probably wanted to fit it into a certain number This was a pleasurable read— it feels good to see sex-positive-gay-crimes-against-injustice in a graphic novel。 I also loved how the style changes a little with each chapter。 Brings up good conflicts of trust and the different paths people take to survive。 It’s not five stars because it is more plot driven and I tend to like when there are really detailed scenes or moments, or more zooming out and zooming in action。 But it makes sense with how they probably wanted to fit it into a certain number of pages。 And also I’m not a classic action comic person, so it is probably more in that realm。 I also love the imagining of future world building going on here too。 。。。more

This comic was really slow at the start but once you discover the plot and get the idea on what’s going to happen it makes you wanna finish the story as soon as you find out the plot because you wanna see how it ends, I thought the concept was pretty neat and went well to make the story what it is, it kept me interested after finding out the plot!

Great sci-fi dystopian story through a sex positive, queer positive, kink positive and sex worker positive lens。 Absolutely worth reading if you are even slightly interested。

Overwhelming。 Sexy AF。 Disturbing。 I have never read another series that takes uber conservative values, injects them with steriods and somehow comes out inspirational。 Strange but awesome story, especially for those on the fringes。 Dive in!

This is a hard book to review。 On the one hand I wish there were more issues available for me to read! Because this is an important work about sexual liberation, sex work liberation, queer liberation, trans liberation, and a dire alarm bell for how much we need anti-fascism and to dismantle white supremacy。 It’s a powerful and intense and smart work。 On the other hand, I’m not sure how much more of this kind of story I can take。 And let’s all take a second to remember I’m just one user writing m This is a hard book to review。 On the one hand I wish there were more issues available for me to read! Because this is an important work about sexual liberation, sex work liberation, queer liberation, trans liberation, and a dire alarm bell for how much we need anti-fascism and to dismantle white supremacy。 It’s a powerful and intense and smart work。 On the other hand, I’m not sure how much more of this kind of story I can take。 And let’s all take a second to remember I’m just one user writing my one review on my singular experience。 I think *you* (as in “most people”) should read this work。 I just don’t think I can take anymore of it。 It’s too real。 It’s too correct。 Its bleakness is very, very informed。 This country and this world hate my body and hate my life, and the bodies and the lives of my loved ones, so much。 It’s hard to be reminded exactly how close we are to being rounded up and used as rape-able objects。 Bent to the whims of the fascist right wing agents in power。 You see the writing on the wall with the normalization of nazis, incels, qanon, MRAs, TERFs, christian evangelist death cults, authoritarians of all stripes, and the moneyed interests that prop them all up。 I used to think the worst they could do to us was kill us。 SFSX posits that there’s far worse torture in store for us than just torture for the sake of squeezing out the names of our co-conspirators。 SFSX shows that our torture can be lifelong, that the state can find a use for us far beyond simply killing us。 The kind of fate that makes you pray for a death that will never come soon enough。 And that’s a lot for me to take。 I think the world deeply needs this alarm bell。 It may already be too late, but the world needs to know this horridly affecting combination of The Handmaid’s Tale and The Invisible Kingdom and A Tale of Two Cities and even Berserk is very much within the realm of the possible。 Is closer to five minutes into the future than it is 50 years into the future。 But as a survivor of。。。a lot of things, this is just too much。 Sometimes fictional stories involving rape can be healing for me, the aforementioned Berserk for one, most of the time all they do is remind me that I could be back in dangerous situations in a heartbeat。This is a masterwork in so many ways that I just didn’t bother nitpicking any of the little things, but it’s just too painful for me by a country mile。 I need to get my copy to someone for whom it can radicalize rather than lead to despair。 。。。more

Sexy but also disturbing, this is an interesting story about the near future where America has been taken over by a puritanical Orwellian movement that seeks to eliminate perversion from society。The story is about sex workers, and the art is sexy, but the story is more dystopian; closer to "A Handmaids Tale" or "1984"。 Sexy but also disturbing, this is an interesting story about the near future where America has been taken over by a puritanical Orwellian movement that seeks to eliminate perversion from society。The story is about sex workers, and the art is sexy, but the story is more dystopian; closer to "A Handmaids Tale" or "1984"。 。。。more

This was soooo good!!! Honestly, Margaret Atwood should take some notes。 The story was tight, tense, and easy to follow。 The characters were multifaceted and human。 The art was beautiful。 Trigger warning for non-consensual torture。 There is also a lot of consensual torture and sex but like, if you’ve read the title and synopsis and are still shocked by that, you kinda deserve seeing a couple of hand drawn penises and boobs。

In reviewing SFSX, I decided to break it down into four parts (because I was really torn about whether to give it three stars or four)。 So, here we go!1。 Setting: 4 stars SFSX takes place in a futuristic America (specifically San Francisco) controlled by a conservative group known as the Party。 It was reasonably well thought out and definitely enough to suspend my disbelief 。。。 but I think the dichotomy between the big-bads could have been explored more。 Also 。。。 why doesn't anyone just remove t In reviewing SFSX, I decided to break it down into four parts (because I was really torn about whether to give it three stars or four)。 So, here we go!1。 Setting: 4 stars SFSX takes place in a futuristic America (specifically San Francisco) controlled by a conservative group known as the Party。 It was reasonably well thought out and definitely enough to suspend my disbelief 。。。 but I think the dichotomy between the big-bads could have been explored more。 Also 。。。 why doesn't anyone just remove their halo trackers? 2。 Art: 5 StarsTo be fair, I don't usually read graphic novels, so I'm not super picky about art。 But as far as I'm concerned, the art was awesome。 I loved the color palette, and the use of a completely different style for a flashback was kind of cool。 Honestly, the art is what made me buy this book。 (And contrary to what some reviewers have said, I didn't think it was too graphic。 If anything, the violence and sex were surprisingly low-key for a book about sex-workers and hostile government takeovers。) SPOILERS IN THE NEXT SECTION!3。 Plot: 3 StarsThis is where things start to get a little iffy。 Considering how things played out, the motivation for the characters wasn't entirely convincing。 So, Sylvia and Casey decide to help Avory after they see that Jones is still alive。 There's even a line where one of them says that they'll bring Jones home--brainwashed or no--even if they have to put her in a straightjacket to do it。 (And I'm thinking, hell yeah! You've got to take care of your family。) But the second she behaves like a brainwashed person, they kill her。Then, toward the end of the volume, Avory stays behind as the scapegoat。 And aside from having a gunshot wound (which, by the way, so does Sylvia, yet she's somehow completely fine?) there's no clear reason why she couldn't have just escaped with the others。 I assume the idea is that by staying behind, she effectively ended the pursuit。 But still, they could have tried a little harder。 (It was a bit of a Jack and Rose on the Titanic door situation。)4。 Characters: 2 starsI wanted to love them, but I only liked them。 They all felt interchangeable to me。 It seemed like everyone was a computer genius badass。 Usually in a group, people have different personality types, like one person is the heart, one person's the brain, one person's a total space cadet, etc。 (And to be fair, I know those are cliche。) But still, the characters were a bit too one-size-fits-all。 (Even Denis, which made me sad, because I really wanted to get to know them better。) So, in the end, we come out with an average of 3。5 stars。 But still, I would absolutely read the second volume if one ever comes out。 。。。more

Tina Horn absolutely nailed this concept。 Image comics are collectively putting out the most intriguing sex positivity graphic novels。 (Sunstone, Sex Criminals, Swing) and now SFSX。 However, Tina Horn has added a dystopian, sci-fi element to her fascinating world。 It feels like a crossover of Sunstone & 1984。 The story has some real heartfelt to pant-wetting moments。 So, what is SFSX in a nutshell? Sex workers are normal people, however, social media, at the best of times has made it very difficult for sex workers to fully express themselves。 Banning accounts! For being to explicit! Which is a gargantuan contradiction。 Many sex workers and Dommes are articulate, kind-hearted individuals and make great role models。 However, the media paints them as just whores。 Which is totally ignorant。I highly recommend this book, the world building, the writing and ooh the artwork is total bad ass。Well done team you knocked it out of the park! 。。。more

I agree with many of the assessments of this being cliche and unoriginal, and underdeveloped。 If you’re only looking to look at comics of kink and torture then this may be for you, if you’re looking for a developed world and story with diversity and sexuality that plays into the plot and characters I’d suggest Saga。

Great characters, great story, great concept。 If you’re squeamish about torture, however, steer clear! I’m usually fine with that sort of thing but this graphic novel is HEAVY on it。 so be warned!!

Someone at book club called this "action movie Handmaid’s Tale," which isn’t a bad summary。 There’s good material in here, and I connected with the characters, but the writing (and that includes visual narrative flow) is choppy and overly simplistic。 For a concept this heavy-handed and sensational to work on more than a surface level, the story would need more space。 It’s also graphically violent on a level I found unnecessary- not only in a way that wasn’t to my taste, but that ultimately took Someone at book club called this "action movie Handmaid’s Tale," which isn’t a bad summary。 There’s good material in here, and I connected with the characters, but the writing (and that includes visual narrative flow) is choppy and overly simplistic。 For a concept this heavy-handed and sensational to work on more than a surface level, the story would need more space。 It’s also graphically violent on a level I found unnecessary- not only in a way that wasn’t to my taste, but that ultimately took away from the story’s impact。I WANT to like it。 I think it could be a good story, with work。 But as it is, it’s kind of a mess。 。。。more

Sex workers take down a not-too-distant-potential-future collaborative regime between radical feminists and incels。 Queer and diverse, sex positive, intersectional, political。 The torture was a bit much for me, which says more about where I’m at with my entertainment media right now than the quality of this work。

This comic is a celebration of sex workers and I enjoyed every bit of the story line, as it was action packed and fast past。 My only issue and, it’s unfortunate because this is a comic, is the art style。 Two of the main characters were almost identical and I could only tell them apart from their hair style。 They were both Black women which only feeds into the whole “all Black people look alike” assumption。 The artist needs to do better in future issues。 Furthermore, the style as a whole just see This comic is a celebration of sex workers and I enjoyed every bit of the story line, as it was action packed and fast past。 My only issue and, it’s unfortunate because this is a comic, is the art style。 Two of the main characters were almost identical and I could only tell them apart from their hair style。 They were both Black women which only feeds into the whole “all Black people look alike” assumption。 The artist needs to do better in future issues。 Furthermore, the style as a whole just seemed rough drafty as opposed to final。 This could all be personal preference, but I’ve seen some amazing comic drawings and this just cannot compare。 Nonetheless, if you can get past the artwork like I had to, this is a great story and I’d recommended。 。。。more

In a post-apocalyptic future, it’ll be the sex workers that save us, of course。 At this point, it’s almost a cliche, am I right? Okay, maybe not。 But in provocateur Tina Horn’s lurid “SFSX, Volume 1: Protection” humanity’s salvation comes at the hands (and mouths and other body parts) of a ragtag group of queers, prostitutes, porn stars, transgender people, and their allies。 Obviously, there’s a lot to unpack (pun intended?) with “SFSX,” and it’s not going to be a series for everyone (or even mo In a post-apocalyptic future, it’ll be the sex workers that save us, of course。 At this point, it’s almost a cliche, am I right? Okay, maybe not。 But in provocateur Tina Horn’s lurid “SFSX, Volume 1: Protection” humanity’s salvation comes at the hands (and mouths and other body parts) of a ragtag group of queers, prostitutes, porn stars, transgender people, and their allies。 Obviously, there’s a lot to unpack (pun intended?) with “SFSX,” and it’s not going to be a series for everyone (or even most people), but I found the book to be extremely thought-provoking, wildly imaginative, and thrillingly violent。In the not-too-distant-future America of “SFSX,” the country has overcorrected back to its fanatically puritanical roots, overseen by a conglomerate of conservative fringe groups。 Sexuality is strictly controlled with citizens monitored via their Purity Scores and all things deviant - i。e。 anything that’s outside the scope of a man and woman procreating - are outlawed。 The uninhibited and marginalized are forced to take their behaviors underground, that is until a legendary director and performer recruits some of her friends to help rescue her husband from the tortures of a re-education camp。 Mixing sci-fi, action, and erotica, “SFSX” is kinky and captivating, like a porno version of “Blade Runner。” A noted dominatrix and lecturer on sexuality, Horn certainly knows her stuff and “SFSX” allows her to explore the different facets of what adults enjoy doing with and to one another behind closed doors, be it pleasure or pain or a mixture of both。 Furthermore, for a comic with no small amount of genital abuse, there’s a surprising amount of tenderness to some of the scenes。 In these polarizing times, it’s hard to ignore the identity politics that underlie “SFSX,” especially when a changing Supreme Court makes a situation like the one in the book seem ever more plausible but that’s the point。 Horn obviously wants to push some buttons and this series does that。 Big time。 It’ll turn off some readers but I think it’ll also make some readers do a little soul-searching。 On an artistic level, “SFSX” is a visceral thrill ride, courtesy of gritty art by Michael Dowling & Jen Hickman, with liquid-y guest art by Alejandra Gutierrez (she’s the reason I bought the book in the first place)。 A comic series this outrageous but potentially prescient requires all the collaborators to be at the top of their game and these creators bring it。American comics have come a looooong way。 It really wasn’t that far back when the Comics Code was stripping any sort of objectionable content out of funny books and nowadays one of the big publishers (Image) has a book where fisting, BDSM, stabbings, and nudity are commonplace。 “SFSX” is a wild, wild comic book for a wild, wild crossroads in history。 。。。more
